Sera Gamble definitely took a page from 4.01 in this premiere, though it lacked that episode's strong finish and the choice of monster-of-the-week was decidedly unwise.
I've been trying to avoid any and all spoilers for SPN S6 so I have absolutely no idea how the new season will open. But looking back at S5 episodes did make me think of how season premieres figure into the rest of the season.
I realized that the new season of SPN is about to begin and I hadn't yet done my annual "best written" episodes of the previous season. I'm not surprised it slipped my mind because there wasn't a lot of thinking that had to go into this one.
In the course of looking up an older post I came across what I wrote last year about hospitalizations in SPN. I realized there had been an important change in S5, namely that Sam has finally been a patient. But I think Sam Interrupted ends up revealing a more audience-directed reason for the pattern.
This may have been discussed somewhere already by people more familiar with comics than I am, but I found some curious similarities between Daimon Hellstrom and Sam Winchester, and the overall set-up of SPN. I first came across him because I saw a reference to the comic series The Supernaturals which featured his sister, Satana.
Before the episode, ash48 posted a hypothetical list Dean would have to go through to wrap up this season’s hanging threads. Unfortunately, despite being simply a list it was more entertaining than the penultimate episode.

This latest episode was notable in giving all the characters interesting things to say and do. “Point of No Return” gathered quite a few players and took them places, which is something I wish I could have seen more often this season.
I think that may have been my favorite SPN episode ever. Holy cow, I didn't think it was possible for me to feel this for the show anymore, but just a quarter of the way in, I already felt more moved by it than by any other episode.
I've been musing on something since my last question post about SPN. Some comments by applepie and facetofcathy started me thinking about something that I haven't seen anyone raise regarding the issue of family.
Fortunately there was no truth in advertising in this week's episode title. I imagine Sera Gamble was delighted to have a crack at this storyline. They would also have to have bungled it a lot more than they did for me to be unhappy with it.
Finally, the show is back. It’s not that Swap Meat had fewer plot holes than usual, ha HA, no. But at least it had some important elements that made for a watchable, even memorable episode.
I have to say I was feeling less than enthusiastic about reviewing this episode, not because it was awful but because I just didn't find it very engaging. And then I realized what part of the problem was.
